Momentary and latching functions

Momentary and latching functions are terms used to describe two different types of switch or button behavior.

A momentary switch is a type of switch that is designed to be held down or pressed for only a brief moment in order to activate or deactivate a function. When you release the button, the switch returns to its original position. This is also sometimes referred to as a "push-to-make" switch. Examples of momentary switches include doorbells, computer mouse buttons, and push-to-talk (PTT) buttons on two-way radios.

In contrast, a latching switch is a type of switch that stays in its position once it has been activated until it is manually reset or switched back to its original position. This is also sometimes referred to as a "push-to-toggle" switch. Examples of latching switches include on/off switches for lights, power tools, and appliances.

It's important to note that the terms "momentary" and "latching" are often used in the context of different devices and systems, and the exact functionality of a switch may vary depending on the specific application. However, in general, these terms refer to the basic behavior of the switch or button.

Why choose latching or momentary?

The application in question will determine which type of switch is best suited.

One of the main reasons for choosing a momentary switch will be for operator safety. If it is not safe to leave the device on then it is safer for an operator to have to compress the switch so that the device cannot be left unattended.  Momentary switches are used on heavy duty roller doors; the operator must old down the switch when the door is opening or closing, if there are any obstructions to the doorway, the operator can quickly stop the door from closing preventing an accident.

Latching switches are used for lower risk applications and where it would be highly inconvenient for the operator to have to manually apply pressure to keep the switch on. It would be highly inappropriate to have to stand at a light switch to keep it switched on so a latching switch is far more suitable.
